Expectations that her funeral would be attended by world leaders from far and wide, by and large, proved to be inaccurate, with just two heads of state and 11 Prime Ministers present. Having learnt that Stansted would be very quiet for the occasion, Luton Airport became my venue of choice on the day itself.

Aviation News – NASA’s new WB-57F, N927NA, flies for the first time in 41 years
NASA currently operates a pair of WB-57F high-altitude research aircraft based out of Ellington Field in Texas, but very soon a third airframe will join the fleet. Paul Filmer reports on NASA 927’s first flight.

Military Exercise – Exercise TAC Blaze 2013-1
Since 2009, a disused part of Carlisle Airport has played host to a helicopter detachment from the Koninklijke Luchtmacht – KLu (Royal Netherlands Air Force), to take part in the TAC Blaze exercises, a two to three week deployment to the UK, that usually takes place twice a year. Special Events – Druridge Bay Fly-in – 01-02/07/2013
The Druridge Bay Fly-In is organised by the Northern Aviators, a group of pilots who fly light aircraft, microlights, autogyros, paramotors and powered hang gliders. This year’s event was held over the weekend of 1/2 July with a BBQ, on-airfield camping and a planned on-beach bonfire with a few beers and a chance for a good chat with like minded aviators. Whilst the world and his canine were basking in glorious sunshine in Lincolnshire, some distance to the south another group of enthusiasts were indulging in some aviation nostalgia of a very different variety, from a very different era. Saturday 6 July saw the Shuttleworth Trust put on its second Evening Flying Display of 2013 in perfect, tranquil conditions, and Chris Wood was there for GAR to soak up the atmosphere.

The third and final day of my trip to Germany and the Netherlands started with an 0630 alarm call. Behind the curtains the sun was already shining and the sky was relatively free of cloud. FlightStats indicated that two KLM MD-11s were due to arrive back at Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport at 0650 and 0750 respectively. There was no way we would be in position for the first but every chance we’d catch the second.
