The U-2 first flew on 1 August 1955 and entered service in 1957, following which an impressive career as a high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft has been carved out whilst in service with the USAF, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and NASA.  U-2s are synonymous with the Cold War, where they carried out intelligence gathering over the Soviet Union and Cuba, but the aircraft has also been used extensively during more recent conflicts, including over Afghanistan and Iraq.
