A little gem in the airshow calendar, the Throckmorton Air Show on Saturday 8 June provides an excellent flying programme and host of ground attractions, as Gareth Stringer previews.
The brainchild of Angus Nairn, of television’s ‘Motorway Cops’ fame, the airshow at Throckmorton is certainly well worth checking out – with some superb flying and captivating ground displays – all of which benefits some very worthy charities.
Scheduling the event on the same weekend as that at RAF Cosford, Angus is able to attract a host of aircraft to the former RAF Pershore (near Worcester) which might otherwise be unattainable, the headline act this year surely being Flt Lt Jamie Norris in the Eurofighter Typhoon. The RAF Chinook and Army Air Corps Apache are also due to make an appearance, giving the show a fine line-up of military heavy-metal.
With flying scheduled to start at 12.30pm, and not drawing to a close until Sqn Ldr Dunc Mason, OC Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, displays the Hurricane at 16.45, Throckmorton really does make for a full day out and one which should attract the enthusiast as well as the broader public – especially as the West Midlands is not exactly heaving with airshow action. With this and Cosford on the calendar though, 8 and 9 June should make for a great weekend!
In addition to the Typhoon, Chinook, Apache and the Hurricane, the BBMF will also be displaying a Spitfire, with Parky at the controls, and the Army Air Corps Lynx AH7 solo will also be taking part, in what might be the type’s final season of displays.
Peter Vacher’s beautiful Hurricane Mk.I, in the hands of Stu Goldspink, and Clive Davidson in his rather lovely Harvard complete the line up of treats for warbird fans.
John Beattie will be displaying his Chipmunk, Richard Goodwin is bringing his Christen Eagle and John Scott his CAP-10. while the Aerostars are also performing in four of their Yak-50s.
The Great War Display Team, Brendan O’Brien’s Flying Circus and an auto-gyro (Peter Davies) complete the confirmed line-up, although with a good deal of other traffic en route to Cosford, the beauty of Throckmorton is that you never know what else might drop by!
Angus draws upon his day job for the ground displays with the Central Motorway Police Group demonstrating patrol cars while a Challenger Tank, drift cars, super cars, rescue service demos, classic cars and flight sims are just some of the other attractions on offer.
Best of all, Angus has always used the event to support a number of charities and this year sees SSAFA, Midlands Air Ambulance, Royal British Legion, Help for Heroes, ABF – The Soldier’s Charity and the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund all earmarked for a donation.
