Airshows >>Exclusive - Jubilee tail for Hawker Hunter G-FFOX revealed

Inspired by the Queen's Jubilee, the Olympics and the 100th anniversary of the Central Flying School, Hawker Hunter G-FFOX (Callsign - Firefox!) is now proudly wearing a Union Jack scheme on her tail.

The addition of the new artwork follows aircraft owner Colin Boyd's recent post in the Hunter Flight Academy's Facebook group, where he said he was considering repainting the aircraft for 2013.

Having seen the spectacular paint schemes already applied to the 2012 Royal Air Force Tucano and Hawk display aircraft, Colin decided that something similar appealed for next year, little realising perhaps the interest that the idea would generate.

When aviation enthusiast Damien Burke posted a mock-up showing the addition of a Union Jack design to the Hunter's tail, Colin realised that this would actually be achievable for 2012 and quickly sought permission from the relevant authorities.

With permission granted, Vintage Flyers at The Cotswold Airport rapdily set about applying the colours and, within the past 24 hours, the work on the tail has been completed. A final part of the process will see the jet re-marked as G-FFOX, to comply with the regulations regarding privately owned aircraft wearing military markings, but non-standard schemes.

"I think it looks excellent," Colin told GAR, "it is very patriotic and, with lots to commemorate in the UK this year, what could be better than applying a truly classic symbol of Great Britain on to a classic British aircraft?"

'We are already in contact with a professional designer with regard to repainting the whole aircraft for next year, but, in the meantime, let's hope that airshow organisers book her to fly, or for their static displays, so that everyone can get to see her. Chris Heames is our Chief Pilot / Display Pilot and Neil McCarthy was signed off last week to fly the aircraft too, so we should be able to get her out and about if the demand is there.

"Also, anyone with a PPL who sees G-FFOX and fancies flying a classic jet can contact the Hunter Flight Academy to speak to us about the packages we're putting together to enable them to do just that. If you see us at an airshow please do come over for a chat and we can tell you all about it."
