blogGAR: AIRBASE at Coventry-Baginton Airport

6 March 2012 was a glorious day and fortunately coincided with a visit to AIRBASE at Coventry-Baginton Airport and a meeting with Trevor Bailey, Air Atlantique’s Director of Flying, to learn all about The Classic Aircraft Trust (for a piece that appeared in Issue 7 of Global Aviation Magazine).

It was my first visit to Coventry since September 2010 and the transformation of AIRBASE in the intervening period was quite striking; a well-stocked shop, a gravelled area where a Hunter and Canberra now stand, the DC-6 Diner, picnic benches and a fantastically laid out selection of large aircraft on the grass. It looks great and the quality of aircraft on display cannot be faulted.

Since that last visit, Shackleton MR.2, WR963, has had a major facelift! Now resplendent in RAF Coastal Command colours, she looks absolutely magnificent and is a real credit to the team that so lovingly maintains her in ground running condition.

It was the first opportunity I’d had to see the Meteor T.7 since it had taken to the skies during the previous summer, albeit she was only sat on the ground in the hangar on this occasion. As with the Shackleton, she’s another stunning restoration and I look forward to seeing her in the air before the season is out!

AIRBASE is open Wednesday to Sunday (plus Bank Holidays) between 10am and 6pm. For more information on AIRBASE, please see the official website.
