Battle of Britain 70th Anniversary Articles

SEP 04 2010
Battle of Britain 70th: GAR launches Battle of Britain 70th microsite.

Over the past few months it has been our privilege to meet some of the people who still tell the story of “The Few” and work day in and day out to ensure that they and the machines they flew are not forgotten.

We have been behind the scenes with the Royal Air Force’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight as they prepared for this momentous year of commemoration, travelled with current RAF aircrew as they took a trip down memory lane to mark their own squadron’s history and were honoured to visit Peter Vacher at his home for a close look at his legendary Hurricane R4118.

They are just some of the highlights in what will be our own tribute to those pivotal few months in 1940 and we would love to hear your thoughts on this significant anniversary so please feel free to leave your musings and comments on the features as they are published.

We commence with something very special, a piece on “The Few” from an incredible author and aviation historian, Dilip Sarkar MBE FRHistS BA(Hons).

Dilip has now written 28 books and is, according to Professor Gary Sheffield, ‘an acknowledged expert on the Battle of Britain’. He was made an MBE for services to aviation history in 2003, having been nominated by Lady Bader and Sir Alan Smith, and his election to the Fellowship of the Royal Historical Society in 2006 was proposed by Dr Alfred Price. A First Class Honours graduate in history, he is now a doctoral research student at the University of Birmingham’s Centre for Air Power Studies.
